Join Government Canyon’s Resource Specialist, Kelsey Woodward, to get a glimpse into the cultural and natural history of Government Canyon. 9AM-11AM or possibly Noon. This 2-3 mile hike will take us to the historic Kallison Ranch homestead. Along the way we’ll discuss the Native American and ranching history of the property, the historical use of common flora and fauna, how past use has shaped the landscape we see today and our present management of the property. Hike starts promptly at 9 AM! Participants should be able to hike over rocky, rugged, uneven ground with changes in elevation. This program is open to all ages, minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian; no pets please. Reservations required and will be accepted through noon on Friday April 21, 2017. Join Government Canyon State Natural Area Volunteers on a Backcountry bike ride. Open to ages 18 and older. All participants must be able to ride over broken, rocky terrain with some changes in elevation. Participation is limited to 8 participants; no pets, please. Join Government Canyon’s Texas Ambassador for a tech-savvy BioBlitz hike down the Joe Johnston Trail. Participants will learn how to use the iNaturalist app during orientation then test their skills in the field, taking photos and marking GPS locations of species along the trail with the iNaturalist app. No experience is required! Please download the iNaturalist app on your iPhone or Android device prior to your arrival. Open to ages 13 and over; minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No pets please. The iNaturalist app orientation starts promptly at 8:30AM with a two-hour hike following. Reservations required and will be accepted through Noon Friday April 21, 2017. Explore the night sky with the San Antonio Astronomical Association on Saturday. View Mars, Jupiter and its moons, constellations, star clusters, nebula, galaxies, and much more. You can also learn the basics of telescope operation. BYO telescope or binoculars, or enjoy the sights from one of the SAAA’s telescopes. Please arrive by 8:00 PM. No pets please. Park in Parking Lot A and walk the short distance to Parking Lot C where the telescopes will be set up. Dress for the weather. Bring water, a snack if you like, and your own flashlight with a red lens cover. Open to ages 12 and older; participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There’s a treasure hunt going on that combines technology with nature!
Learn how to Geocache with experienced geocacher Dawn Bodhi and the Friends of Government Canyon. This is a classroom-style program geared toward adults, with minimal walking. Limited to the first 20 who sign up with a STRICT AGE POLICY. Participants must be 16 and older. For those interested, after the class we will search for “practice caches” placed near the Visitor Center. Bring your own GPS if you wish to participate in this segment. No pets please.
